I used to think that self-care was all about doing something for myself, by myself, such as a bubble bath, going for a walk, journaling, reading and while all those things are great and a part of self-care, there’s so much more to self-care.

One of the most important aspects of self-care is connection with others. Connection is crucial for our mental health and wellbeing. We can’t thrive in life without connection. Without being part of a tribe back in the hunter gatherer times, we would have died if we were kicked out of the group. We need tribe, community and connection.

As moms, we often find ourselves in uncertain, stressful and heart breaking situations when our teens struggle with mental health challenges. The journey is full of uncertainty, sleepless nights, and an endless stream of worries. It's during these times that we must recognize the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence, but as a lifeline that enables us to get through it and provide steady support to our struggling teens.

Self-Care as a Path to Connection:

Contrary to popular belief, self-care is not synonymous with solitude. I got this wrong at first. While taking moments for ourselves is crucial, the heart of self-care lies in connection—with ourselves and with others. It's about building and nurturing relationships that serve as pillars of strength, empathy, and understanding. Connecting with other moms who share similar journeys can be a beacon of light in the darkest moments. I will never forget the mom that told me “it gets better,” I was feeling so helpless, hopeless and heartbroken at that time. Just hearing these words, gave me hope and light.

The Healing Power of Shared Experiences:

In the meaning of self-care, the act of sharing our experiences becomes a transformative force. When we open up about our challenges, fears, and triumphs, we create a space for authentic connection. Other moms facing similar struggles can offer insights, strategies, solutions and the comfort of knowing that we’re not alone. It's a reminder that our stories intertwine, and in sharing, we strengthen the bonds that sustain us. We learn best by sharing and hearing stories from each other.

Connecting Through Vulnerability:

True connection arises from vulnerability. It's the willingness to let others see our imperfections, fears, and uncertainties. When I was able to share my worries, fears and concerns with other moms, I felt this huge weight and burden lifted. In the context of supporting teens with mental health challenges, embracing vulnerability becomes a form of self-care. When we allow ourselves to be seen and heard, we invite others to do the same. In this shared vulnerability, a network of understanding and support blossoms.

Building Communities of Support:

Self-care isn't a solitary endeavour; it's a collective effort. Moms supporting moms create a community of resilience, where the collective strength surpasses the sum of individual struggles. We’re stronger together. Whether through local support groups, online communities, or informal gatherings, the act of connecting with others amplifies the impact of self-care, making it a reciprocal and nurturing experience. By helping others, this is the greatest way to help ourselves.

In the journey of parenting teens with mental health challenges, self-care is not a luxury we can afford to do without; it’s the essence of our ability to endure, adapt, and thrive. By understanding that self-care is not just about pampering ourselves but about connecting with others, we unlock a profound source of strength. Let's embrace the transformative power of shared experiences, vulnerability, and collective support, creating a community where every mom feels seen, heard, and resilient in the face of life's challenges.

I’m here cheering YOU on! 🥰
