Have you ever noticed that when you get out of your everyday environment and routine and do someting new or meet new people, it changes your perspective and mindset instantly?

The other day, I went on a one day retreat with a friend. It was during school hours, so I was even home for dinner. That one day, was transformative for me. I didn’t’ even realize the power of that day until several days later. I spent the day reading, journaling and listening to a few talks. I think it was being in a new setting with new people and doing something new, that was so powerful.

It’s easy to feel stuck in our every day routine and lives when we’re on autopilot and repeat day after day. Add on the challenges of parenting a teen struggling with mental health issues, you find yourself, exhausted, overwhelmed and feeling isolated pretty quick.

Pick something new to try or experience. There’s nothing better for getting you out of your own head when you’re focusing on learning something new, being around new people or helping someone else.

So, step outside, explore new places, or even rearrange the furniture in your living room for a different feeling. Small changes can yield significant results. The key is to disrupt the routine that may be exacerbating the stress you're feeling.

Imagine the sense of liberation as you step into a world different from the one you know with responsibilities and challenges. A stroll in nature, a visit to a local art gallery, or even a spontaneous day trip can provide a welcome respite. These experiences not only offer a break from the daily struggles but also serve as a reminder that there is more to life than the hurdles you're currently facing.

I started volunteering recently at the Ronald McDonald House where I live. Being around other amazing women and helping other families that are going through unbelievable challenges, makes you forget or put into a new perspective your own issues and problems.

Engaging in new activities is another potent tool in your mental health toolkit. It doesn't have to be grand or time-consuming; it just needs to be something different. Join a yoga class, start a book club, or explore a hobby you've always wanted to pursue. These ventures not only introduce fresh elements into your life but also provide a platform for personal growth and self-discovery.

As moms, it's easy to fall into the trap of sacrificing our own well-being for the sake of our families. However, by prioritizing your mental health and embracing change, you're not only benefiting yourself but also creating a positive ripple effect for your teen and the entire family. When you feel better, you parent better!

In the middle of stress and exhaustion, remember that you're not alone. Countless moms are navigating similar challenges, facing the same issues and problems with their teens. By acknowledging the importance of changing your environment, you're taking a proactive step towards reclaiming your mental health and fostering a more resilient, connected family. And, you’re being a role model for your teen.

So, step outside, breathe in the fresh air, take a day trip and embark on a journey of renewal—one that begins with a simple change of scenery.
