I used to think that setting boundaries, just meant saying “no.” You set boundaries to create a safe space where both you and your teenager can coexist peacefully, even in the middle of mental health challenges. Boundaries help to establish clear rules and expectations from everyone.

Parenting is a beautiful and challenging, journey filled with endless love and support. When your teenager struggles with mental health challenges, this journey takes on an added layer of complexity. As a parent, it's natural to want to offer unending support. However, in the middle of this support, there lies a powerful tool for your own mental health and well-being: clear boundaries.

The Balance of Support:

Supporting a teenager through mental health challenges can be emotionally draining. It's easy to lose yourself in the process, constantly giving without replenishing your own emotional reserves. Clear boundaries act as a safeguard, allowing you to strike a balance between being there for your teen and preserving your own mental and emotional health. You can’t pour from any empty cup. You need to recharge or you can’t be there to help and support your teen.

Preserving Your Energy:

Your energy is precious, especially when supporting someone through difficult times. Think of your energy as a set amount of bars that you get every day. Once they’re gone, you can’t get them back, unless you plug in and recharge. Setting clear boundaries ensures that your energy is utilized effectively. It allows you to focus on the most essential aspects of support while preventing burnout. By conserving your energy, you can sustain your support over the long haul without feeling depleted. If you’re constantly on the road to burn out, overwhelm and exhaustion, you’re not much help to anyone else.

Emotional Self-Preservation:

Your emotions are valid and significant. Establishing boundaries helps you navigate the rollercoaster of emotions that come with supporting a teenager's mental health journey. It enables you to express your feelings, set limits on what you can handle emotionally, and seek support for yourself without guilt. It’s not your job to fix ALL of your teen’s constant needs and challenges. Get support for you and your teen. This emotional self-preservation is vital for your own mental well-being.

Modeling Healthy Behavior:

By setting clear boundaries, you're not only taking care of your own mental health but also modeling healthy behavior for your teenager. You teach them the importance of self-care, self-respect, and assertiveness. These invaluable lessons empower your teen to develop their own boundaries, fostering a healthier relationship with themselves and others. It’s so important for your teen to see you setting the example. If you say that moving your body every day is important to you, even if it’s just 5 minutes, show your teen that you do this!

Enhancing Communication:

Healthy boundaries facilitate open and honest communication. When both you and your teen understand the limits and expectations, conversations become more transparent, honest and respectful. This open dialogue can strengthen your relationship, leading to a deeper understanding of each other's needs and concerns and fostering better connection.

How to Establish Boundaries:

Self-reflection/self-awareness: Understand your own limits, emotions, and needs.

Clear Communication: Have open, honest conversations with your teen and family members about your boundaries.

Consistency: Be consistent in enforcing the boundaries you've set, providing stability for both you and your teen.

Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Setting boundaries is not selfish; it's an act of self-compassion. You deserve to prioritize your own mental health and wellbeing. If you feel better mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually, you can be the parent that you want to be.

In the journey of supporting a teenager through mental health challenges, clear boundaries emerge as threads of strength, resilience, and self-preservation. They are not barriers but bridges, connecting you and your teenager in a healthy, honest and respectful relationship. Embrace the power of boundaries, not just for the well-being of your teenager but also for your own mental health.

Remember, by nurturing and prioritizing your own emotional and mental health, you're not only taking care of yourself but also creating a nurturing environment where your teenager can thrive.
