Taking my 19 year old daughter to the airport this weekend to see her off to start her new journey as a student in Belgium was exciting, worrisome and surreal for me. A few years ago, I never would have imagined the day we would be sending her off on an airplane by herself to a new country where they speak another language to start her own life. I was proud of us all for getting to this moment. It hit me how important transitions are in life for all of us, especially our teens. It’s crucial that we get the support for ourselves to help them.

I want to share with you five different ways to get support for yourself. The more support you have, the better you can navigate the ups and downs in life. It’s definitely a rollercoaster ride raising a teen with mental health hallenges.

1. Connect with Other Moms

One of the most effective ways to find support is to connect with other moms who are facing similar challenges. Seek out local support groups or online communities dedicated to parents of teenagers dealing with mental health issues. These spaces provide a safe and empathetic environment where you can share your experiences, exchange advice, and find solace in the shared understanding of your struggles. I’m part of several FB groups that offer support and it makes a big difference to have a place to share your experiences and ask questions.

2. Reach Out to Mental Health Professionals

Consider seeking guidance from mental health professionals who specialize in working with teens. Therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists can offer valuable insights and strategies to help both you and your teenager cope with mental health challenges effectively. They can also provide you with tools to better understand and support your teen's needs. My parenting changed when I got the support and expertise from a therapist. She taught me different tools for how to handle my teen and communicate more effectively than what I was doing at the time because I didn’t know any better.

3. Foster Open Communication

Maintaining open and honest communication with your teenager is essential. Encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment or criticism. Creating a safe space for dialogue helps build trust and allows you to better understand their needs. It's also a way to ensure they feel supported and heard during their mental health journey. Practice just listening to them without offering your advice or solutions. Everyone wants to feel heard.

4. Recharge and Practice Self-Care

Caring for a teen with mental health challenges can be emotionally draining. It's vital to prioritize self-care and take regular breaks to recharge. Reach out to family members or friends who can provide breaks or assistance when needed. Remember that taking care of your own well-being is not selfish but essential to being a supportive mom. This is something that changed how I parented and the quality of my life. When I started to prioritize my self-care, even 5 minutes in the morning, I felt better equipped to handle the daily challenges and issues that come up. My state of mind and energy improved. I was able to connect with my kids better because I felt better. Self-care is a self-less act!

5. Stay Informed and Educated

Empower yourself with knowledge about your teenager's specific mental health challenges. Understanding the condition, treatment options, and available resources can help you make informed decisions and advocate effectively for your teen's needs. Attend workshops, read books, and stay up-to-date with reputable online sources related to your teen's mental health condition. It’s so important to keep learning. I’m constantly reading books, listening to podcasts, attending workshops so that I can become a better parent all the time. Learning new ways of parenting and tools that help have made all the difference. I’m a better parent because I keep learning and know I have a life time of learning ahead of me. It’s exciting to know that I can learn new and more effective ways of parenting all the time.

Being a mom of a teenager struggling with mental health challenges can be a daunting journey, but you are not alone. By connecting with other moms facing similar situations, seeking professional guidance, fostering open communication, prioritizing self-care, and staying informed, you can find the support you need.

Remember that your efforts to support your teenager's well-being also require self-compassion and self-care on your part. Your commitment to finding support and understanding will not only benefit your teen but also strengthen your bond as a family. You win and your family wins!
