I started this blog at StayingActive.ca , as well as Staying Active Health & Wellness Ltd., around the core philosophy that it is never too late, and you are never “too old”, to incorporate the principles of fitness and healthy living into your life to regain quality of life, renewed energy and vitality, and independence!
I am a Fitness Instructor with my Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association (AFLCA) Certification in Fitness for the Older Adult. I chose to go into this specialization because I believe that fitness for older adults (65+) is key to independent living and quality of life. I try to help the older adults in my classes achieve a balanced lifestyle that encompasses all dimensions of health & wellness. My aim is to help older adults be conscious of their well-being, and to be able to achieve their health and fitness goals, so that they can remain independent, mobile, and enjoy their lives!
Today’s older adults are more active than ever, and this is a trend that is going to continue. The former perception of senior citizens as sedentary is fading away. It is my goal and passion to assist older adults with the required strength, flexibility and cardio exercises, as taught in group fitness classes, to allow them to continue to enjoy activities such as golf, hiking, gardening, and dancing – but also to give seniors the necessary health and vitality so that they can continue to live independently, in their own homes, for as long as possible.
My grandmother Mary served as the inspiration for going into older adult fitness, as well as the founding of my company (with some help from my husband Chris). She was an older adult group fitness instructor who taught group fitness classes at many of Calgary’s older adult facilities in southeast Calgary until she was well into her 70s, including one I currently teach at! I was very excited to do this after raising 4 kids and seeing the importance of fitness, healthy eating, and active living.
